Hi all,
Canada's national newspaper publishes an article every week called Body
Works, in which it describes "How and Why things happern". One Wednesday
(March 5) it was talking about asthma and why the rate of it has doubled in
the past 15 years. It went on to talk about each of the variables and the
last one was changes in baby nutrition. It stated: " Another controversy,
also unresolved, is that the past two decades have been an era of
bottlefeeding and formulas, as well as processed and packaged meals. This
may have increased food sensitivities. Dr. Chad (President of the Canadian
Society of Allergy and Clinical Immunology) said there is evidence to
support both sides of the debate. Some research suggests breast-fed babies
can be exposed to allergens too early, making them produce more antibodies.
Other studies appear to show breastfeeding can help prevent asthma. It is
clear, though, that what a mother eats, drinks or smokes while she is
breastfeeding can have an effect on stimulating sensitivities."
I wrote a note to them to point out that the issue was quite clear,
that formula fed infants have seven times greater allergies than breastfed
babies etc. but would really like a deluge on them to make them print a
correction and perhaps do an article on the breast. If you have a spare
minute please e-mail them at [log in to unmask]

Thanks
Jennifer
