I tell mothers to expect nothing the first few times--no pump is
efficient as a baby. We use double kits and hospital grade electric
pumps. Most moms get a few drops from at least one breast by the third
or fourth time. If they pump regularly beginning within 12-24 hours
and/or have some breast stimulation, they usually get from 2-15 ml. the
second day. By the third day, they usually get 5 cc to 2 oz. or more.
Some moms get 5-15 cc the first day, 30 cc the second day. If the
mother starts late, is inconsistent, or is sick or unusually stressed
(twins, very sick baby, high blood pressure, had very long and/or
difficult labor) she may not get anything for 2 days or more or she may
start with a normal or above average amount and gradually get less and
less (this is especially true for the "super mom" of twins who wants to
do everything for them herself).
A twin mom whose supply is dwindling needs strong encouragement to adopt
a strict schedule: every 3 hours offer the breast, have someone else
supplement, take care of her own needs (eat, drink, SLEEP).
I am NOMAIL, so if you have comments for me, please e-mail me
personally.
