Dear Lactnetters-
A mother of a two year old was diagnosed with cancer of the sinuses
(head, not breasts) during her second pregnancy. Surgery was done in January.
At 28 weeks gestation, the medical team felt that they could wait no longer to
do follow-up radiation threatments, and the bby was delivered by cesarean.
Baby, of course, is in NICU. Mom's radiation tx has begun. She nursed
baby #1 and is broken-hearted about baby# 2 not getting her milk. The supply
of expressed milk that she produced before =radiation is rapidly depleting.
Her oncologist has told her that she must discard the pump. Is the milk
likely to be affected by the radiation tx to her sinuses? If not, does
anyone have any references? Or a well thought out rationale?
Hopes and prayers for this family are also appreciated.
Please respond privately as well as to the list as I remain nomail until the
end of the semester.
     Sincerely,
