conversations and observations, they start to pump very soon and give bottles
of EBM, and then top up with formula very soon. Long-term unrestricted bf is
very unusual - and the tendency is that the larger the family, the less time
the baby gets on excl. bf....and the bf experience tends to worsen with the
number of children because of this, not because of the age of the mother.

Privacy and modesty are big issues here. There's a pretty well established
Jewish legal position that it's no modesty problem to bf around your own
husband. But it's clear that you can't do so (at least visibly) around other
not-very-young boys or men. So when you have had enough children that you
have, say, a 10 year old son -- not to mention a 20 year old son in law! --
you are going to have to spend a lot of time in the back bedroom while
someone else takes care of your older children, or you are going to give
bottles.

And, as you point out, this is true even of those who are willing to forgo
the greater fertility of earlier weaning. So for those who find spacing
between children to be a disappointment continued exclusive bf becomes even
harder to choose.
