Here is what I know of jaundice and asian children. I was learning about
jaundice and the breastfed baby about 5 years ago and read that if your baby
has any asian blood then the bilirubin levels could naturally be higher.
About this time my sister (caucasian-swiss,german, irish, english descent)
married to a guy with a Japanese mother and American (caucasian) father, had
their first child. Her bilirubin level was 23 at one week of age, when she
went in for her first checkup, the doctor did not prescribe lights or
formula, just recommended continued breastfeeding and to come in the
following day to check levels again. The next day it was at 21. I am not
sure if she needed to go in the next day or not, probably, but the doctor
was not overly concerned because the baby was nursing well and otherwise
appeared very healthy (lots of wet and poopy diapers, alert).

I was impressed that her doctor did not get overly aggressive. He practices
in Orlando, Florida.

Of course, if the situation looked worse, I am sure this doctor would have
been more concerned.
