According to various studies on radioactive levels after the explosion at
Chernobyl, cow's milk had higher levels (in some cases 10 times higher) than
breastmilk. The advisory was for mothers to nurse their babies and be
careful about their diets, avoiding contaminated local vegetables, milk, meat
and fish. This information is from Riordan and Auerbach's text,
Breastfeeding and Human Lactation (2nd edition--pages 182, 183). People who
lived through this did not have a choice about living in contamination. But
going there deliberately is a choice that in my estimation is foolhardy and
may cause future regrets. Valerie W. McClain, IBCLC
