I did write them on July 17.

To the Editor:

I am writing about the misinformation contained in your July 97 issue, in the
section titled "A Visit to the Pediatrician." The information on vitamin and
mineral supplementation is not current. Vitamin D and iron are present in
breastmilk and are even more bioavailable than in formula. This means that
the infant actually absorbs more.

Unfortunately, many pediatricians are not knowledgeable about current
breastfeeding management, and formula is marketed to them so vigorously that
they believe the skewed information. May I suggest that in future articles
about breastfeeding you consult the most up-to-date, scientific sources. I
suggest these two as a start:

La Leche League International Center for Breastfeeding Information (CBI)
provides research, professional studies, abstracts, computerized database,
and is updated monthly; call 708-455-7730.

Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine, Dr. Ruth Lawrence, Univ. of Rochester
School of Medicine, 716-275-4354. Membership is open to physicians only.

Sincerely,
