Ruth, I received the same message from another mail list, then this follow up
message:

<<Please disregard the previous message on the hate groups. It turns out
that this is an issue which was resolved almost a year ago (see forwarded
message below). Sorry!>>

rec.music.white-power vote. It appears that the proposal to create that
newsgroup was defeated 11 months ago, with the result posted to
news:news.groups in June of 1996. The subject does not appear to have come
up again in news:news.groups recently, but someone has apparently
inadvertently restarted the "vote no" campaign for a dead issue.

I agree that the thought of such a group was abhorrent; you'll be glad to
know it failed by approximately a 3000 vote margin. (Which is a truly
overwhelming turnout for these news group votes.)

If you're interested in performing the search yourself, go to Deja News and
do a search for articles with rec.music.white-power in the subject. Since
it was a controversial issue, there are LOTS of hits. I refined the search
by doing a power search restricted to the group news.groups (which is the
only place where official discussion takes place on news group proposals
(RFD's)). That still results in something like 1377 matches on this
particular issue, so watch for posts that also have the word "results" in
the subject.>>>>
