Just chatted with a friend of my daughter -- she's been nursing for 9 months
(despite working 12 hour shifts as an RN). She says that a month ago she got
a plugged duct on the outer aspect of the breast. She tried working it out,
but after a week went to her OB who put her on dicloxicillin, 500 mg qid for 14
days although she didn't have any other symptoms of mastitis. By this time,
the "plug" had migrated to the top of the breast. Within three days of going
on the antibiotic, she started having excruciating, sharp shooting
bite-the-bullet latch on pain only on that side which goes away after about two minutes.
This has continued for the past three weeks. The plug is gone, she did have
a vaginal yeast infection as a result of the antibiotics which 150 mg
Diflucan "cured."

She also has periodic sharp shooting pains in the breast which go from chest
wall to nipple -- either just before nursing, just after nursing, or in the
shower. (Not every time, but several times a day).

No burning nipples, no other yeasty signs. Just this horrendous latch on and
breast pain in the one breast. When she pumps at work she feels the same
thing, though not to the same degree as she does when the baby nurses.

The other side is fine, and the affected side produces just as much milk as
it always did.

Ideas? The only suggestion I had was some ibuprophen on a regular around the
clock basis as an anti-inflammatory. Baby isn't latching on any differently
than she did before -- and at 9 months I'm not sure you are going to change a
baby's latch in any case. But I don't think that is it. I also don't think
it is yeast -- but I'm sure open to being convinced.
