A fellow LC (Dana Schmidt) who got dropped off of LN due to yahoo issues a
while back and has been unable to get back on. I am posting this urgent
request for info regarding meningitis and baby.

Called by Pedi to see a baby who had a failed homebirth. Baby born Sat with
vacuum assist after prolonged 2nd stage. BW 7 lbs 11 oz on Sat (4 days ago).
Mom has been what she thought was breastfeeding since then. Midwife doing
follow up care.

Pedi called stated midwife was concerned about baby's weight and to check on
BFing.

Upon assessment, baby had dry MM. Labial tongue tie but not severe, post TT.
Weight shockingly 6 lbs 11! Screechy cry. Color pale. Temp HOT!!

Rectal temp 101.8. Called pedi. Instructed baby needs ED eval but to recheck
temp after room cools off (hot here and A/C off). Attempted to put baby to
breast. Checks sucked in and out but absolutely 0, zilch, nada milk moved!
Also felt some crepitus at the occiput.

Mother's breasts soft. She looked "sick" to me. She admitted that she had a
foul smelling lochia. Rechecked baby's temp. 101.3. Mom's temp 99.8. Off to
the hospital I sent them.

My concern is this. I know protocol is for baby to have L/P. Is there any
risk tome if the baby is + meningitis?

Thank you and yikes, yikes, yikes. Thank God that family had a pedi that
didn't just say, give him some formula. The family had no idea the baby was
febrile.

Please respond privately and to the list.I will send responses to her
myself. Thank you!
