No one knows when the "regulations" for what Vietnamese women should and
should not do during pregnancy and after giving birth originated, but most
Vietnamese women follow them.

Like many women who are going to become mothers, Chi is very worried that
she doesn't know what to do after giving birth to her child.

<snip>

In many regions, women don't eat shrimp, beef, or some types of fish, but in
some regions they eat it all. It is said that eating fish in the first three
month can cause diarrhoea. In general, the basic menu includes lean meat,
rau ngot soup (a kind of vegetable that is very good for women's health
after giving birth), and chao mong gio, (a kind of gruel made of rice, young
papaya and pig's trotter).

According to tradition, a woman will produce more breast milk if she eats
chao mong gio everyday after giving birth. In order to produce milk, some
women try to eat as many as three big bowls of chao mong gio each day.

(see link for full article and other mentions of breastfeeding traditions)
