Dear Marie:

I decided to recheck my calculations re: glucose water. (This information is
not in the usual sources for nutritional information). The source of my
information is the ADA diet manual

To determine the grams sugar in 4 oz of 5% glucose in water, multiply .05 x
120cc = 6.0 gram. To figure out calories, multiply 4 cal per gram glucose.
So, 120 cc dextrose water would provide 24 (not the 20 I quoted) calories.
(I had multiplied by 3.4 cal per gram since that is what we were taught to
do for IV dextrose. I see that the monohydrated form of sugar used in IV
dextrose solution provides 3.4 cal per gram while ingested carbohydrate
provides 4 cal per gram). Maybe someone else knows more about this stuff than
I do. Working with outpatients, I calculate IV solutions once every 4-5
years.....

Hope this helps.
