Susan Burger--DITTO!!

I have been board certified since 1995, and remember a time when I was
the only private LC in town. Now, there are a few of us, and I am still
busier than a cockroach! Still, I notice that when I go to workshops, there are
not a lot of newcomers. As one of my colleagues stated, "There's a lot of
gray hair in this room!"

New blood is good. It brings new ideas and innovations, and it
invigorates our spirits! When I was in nursing school, a wise instructor told me,
"Be careful, some nurses eat their young." We, as a profession, need to be
careful. Let's NOT eat our young. Let's cultivate, and by all means be KIND on
LACTNET, and any other venue where we can encourage our newcomers. There
are a lot of mommies and babies out there. We need a strong, "functional"
body of professionals who can assist them.

Mom of two teenage boys who self weaned, and still cuddle with their mom
when their friends aren't watching!

Motivated newcomers should be looked upon as a potential
resource of new ideas that could reinvorgate the profession. Since none my
colleagues come from the medical profession, I could come up with another
stereotype about recruiting newcomers from nonmedical backgrounds, but that
would be silly.

So, while we can make generalizations from what we observe, be ready to
cultivate whatever we can, whenever we can. Remember Dr. Trendy who thought
LCs were overpaid emotional handholders and wrote about that in his book, is
making babysteps towards progress.

Best regards, Susan E. Burger, MHS, PhD, IBCLC
