Breast lumps can be imaged via ultrasound in lactating women.  Actually,
this is how a good aspiration  biopsy is performed--use an ultrasound to
guide the needle.  The weaning bit is just because "that's the way they've
always done it."  And, that's because Mammograms came into wide spread use
during the time of formula proliferation.
