HI Karen,
Like Catherine already said, a mother with O.I. can breastfeed she'll
probably even know best how to position herself and the baby to be most
comfortable.
Has the baby been checked for O.I. ? If the baby has it too, positioning
needs extra attention. From what I remember from the client I assisted
years ago, standing up while feeding with the baby lying down ( elevated
to chest height) at breast height worked best.

A nurse from NICU asked me the question today, can a mother with
osteogenesis imperfecta breastfeed or is she advised not to do so.
Does anyone have any experience or knowledge of this?

Of course a mom with OI can breastfeed. OI is a related set of genetic
disorders of collagen structure, making the matrix that forms bones be
brittle. There is nothing wrong with the calcium metabolism of people
with OI, it's the protein scaffolding of their bones that is abnormal.
Calcium metabolism during breastfeeding and after weaning is actually
more thrifty than during pregnancy, so if she can build a baby, she can
breastfeed. It's a dominant disorder, so the baby may be affected as
well.

The New Zealand Infant Formula Manufacturers Association (NZIFMA) stalls
the
complaint process to allow an Infant Formula Manufacturer to continue
unethical sponsorship of a child and parenting expo.
"Right at the beginning of April I went through the appropriate
channels,
via the Ministry of Health, to complain about the sponsorship and the
NZIFMA
has not responded" says Louise James, Breastfeeding Advocate. "It
appalls me
that some thing as important as infant's health in New Zealand is not
being
protected by legislated codes and instead we have to put up with
self-regulation that doesn't work."
Tomorrow Hamilton is going to be host to the unethically sponsored expo
despite wide spread community concern.
