Hey Judith,

we were having a discussion on Lactnet about bottles...here is some
interesting stuff..

<<What I have seen over the years is, if the parents are *truly* using a
slow-flow nipple, the hungry baby will have to suck if he wants to fill
up
his belly anytime soon. I always tell parents that when they buy a
package of
nipples marked "slow-flow", they should test the nipples. Sometimes, the
nipples aren't slow, no matter what the packaging says.

I suggest parents also test them regularly once using. I've had parents
find the flow rate changing -- slow at purchase but higher drip rate
with use as cleaning, hot water, etc. can "degrade" or affect the teat.

I tell them to put water in
the bottle and hold the bottle horizontally. Then tip the bottle to
8:00 or
4:00 (depending on whether they are left- or right-handed). The water
should
drip out very very slowly. If it drip, drip, drips very quickly, or
just plain streams out, it's not a slow-flow nipple.

BTW, this is also fairly easy to describe over the phone by saying
"drip...(few seconds)...drip...(few second)...drip" vs. "drip, (one
second) drip,(one second) drip.">>

They were even discussing that there can even be variability in one
brand's 'slow flow' nipples, so always check even if consistently using
the same brand bottles....

I'm sure you know this but also just wanted to throw out that it's very
common for a baby to switch easily between breast and bottle early on,
but at various stages to be prone to nursing strikes....4 mos is a
common time, return of cycles is another time (probably b/c of the
decrease in supply just before bleeding starts). I don't know how long
you wanted to nurse though, so those things might be okay with you;)

love,
kt
