“We need a SofP that makes sense and does not contradict the Standards of
Practice and Code of Ethics.one that does not restrict our freedom of
speech and ability to give correct information to parents.one that makes
sense.”

I couldn’t agree more. I have the distinct advantage (or disadvantage!)of
speaking with women all over the US about bfdg issues. I don’t need to
tell any of you that bfdg misinformation is everywhere. Having our tongues
tied would do a great disservice to all women who want to breastfeed their
babies. I have been a LLLL since 1978 and an IBCLC since 1985. I (up
until a few days ago) thought that our profession was designed to help
mothers and babies.

I have always felt that it is my responsibility to have the correct,
evidence based information to share with a mom when she calls with
questions. How many nursing relationships have been saved (by all of us)
simply because we had the answers? And how many have been lost because of
misinformation (or just plain stupidity) from other HPs? Pump and dump for
a week because of an x-rayed ankle? (‘you wouldn’t want to give your son
cancer would you?’)Poor woman ended up with a wild baby who cried for 2
days, choked on bottles, vomited AIM and (the icing on the cake) developed
a nasty mastitis! I am so sick of seeing bfdg being sacrificed on the
altar of ignorance.

It is my sincere wish that ILCA rethink their SOP and enable us to do our
jobs!
