For nipple irritations I normally suggest lanolin. When the nipple isn't healing within a couple of days what i tend to notice is that the cream is being rubbed off by something (nursing pad, leaking milk, shirt). So i explain to the couple that the healing process is happening from inside out and the cream is a protective barrier so once the cream comes off the body slows down the healing process. So i give dad homework. Dad's homework is that he has to ask his wife occasionally (at least once every 1-2 hours) to have his wife 'flash' him. If the nipple isn't shiny it means the cream has come off and needs to be reapplied. When dads are good at doing there homework mothers notice a difference very quickly in the healing process.
