Coming out of lurkdom to ask a couple of questions on this timely topic. I
have offered my milk to a close friend who quit after a couple of weeks due
to severe nipple pain. She consulted with a couple of IBCLCs and tried a
shield, but couldn't hack it (same thing happened with her first minus the
shield) even with a correct latch. She doesn't want to re-lactate because
she believes she will always have this intense pain (any advice/tips on why
this is happening to her would be much appreciated, says she's had
tenderness/sensitivity since puberty). She is considering using my milk,
but wants to know how it will meet her newborn's (born mid Dec.)
nutritional needs, since my current bf son is 14 months and how she should
combine it with formula (she uses infamil soy). I am currently able to
pump 9oz a day without taking away from my baby and I hope that will
increase to replace the formula entirely. I also started my period for the
first time Today (another timely topic, 6 months with my first, loosely
scheduled and sleeping through the night at 8 weeks, son. this one is a
total demand/AP, co-sleeping, delayed solids baby). How much is that going
to affect my supply. I offered to take any tests. Are there any others
beside Hep B and HIV? Anything else I should tell her or do to make my
milk "more acceptable." Are there any research studies I can show her
about donor milk. She is going to talk to her ped. and the local LLLL, but
I'm afraid they are going to dismiss it as too risky/controversial. Anyone
else faced a similar situation?
