I agree with Kirsten that hospital gowns are disempowering.  I recall many
years ago when I was a brand new student nurse how we used to have to wash
everyone when they were admitted to hospital and put them into one of our
(revolting!) gowns - now if that doesn't send messages to them I don't know
what does!
BUT once home I do suggest to mothers that they stay in their gowns for the
first few days.  This gives the message that no, the mother is not 'back to
her old self' and ready to resume all the cooking, washing, cleaning,
taxiing, etc, etc.  This is a strong symbol which I encourage them to use.
