In response to the Mom with severe periodontal problems during pregnancy...
There have been NO studies to support the thought that nursing or pregnancy
eliminates calcium from the Mom's dental structures. The problem exists as a
bacterial infection which can be enhanced by the growth of the hormones that
occur during pregnancy and can continue during the nursing period. In other
words, the bacteria in the oral cavity actually grow more rapidly and find a
more favorable environment for growth with the increased hormone levels. The
treatment here is to manage or treat  the periodontal disease(which it sounds
like she did) and not let an unrelated disease effect her decision to nurse her
baby. The periodontal disease may have already been present and undiagnosed
prior to her pregnancy. If you would like any additional info or references for
