I have persmission from the mom to post.
I previously worked with a mom whose baby was 7 mos old at the time of
initial contact. She had obly bf her first baby for a few months due to
severe pain and had experienced pain throughout the bf'ing of this
baby. She had previously seen another LC and she had been treated for
thrush and a bacterial infection. We were able to make some
improvements by optimizing latch, but the majority of our contact was
spent in emotional support. She bf for 14 mons, which was remarkable,
given the difficulties. The mom also suffered PPD and she feels the
bf'ing difficulties were the trigger. We met before th birth of her
third child and prepared as best we could through education and
emotional support.
I saw her when the baby was 2 days old. She was a homebirth. The baby
exhibited very clear facial assymetry and it was clear that she had
limited jaw excursion in part due to the structural problems--she was a
precipitous delivery. We optimized positioning and arranged for the bay
to see a CST the next day. Improvement did not continue signiricantly
and mom was experiencing a lot of pain. I met her on day 5 at her
second CST appointment and the baby released a great deal of tension
and trauma. Her tongue, however, did not release at all. I was certain
the baby was tongu-tied, but the CST was not. I sent mom info on
tongue-tie and she saw an ENT friend of hers He told her tha baby's
tongue looked excatly as he liked tongues to be "after" clipping!!
I was still certain of the tongue-tie and am very grateful the mom
still trusted me. I received the phone number of Betty Coryllos in NY,
a surgeon who clips posterior frenula and called her. After I described
my observations, she agreed to see the baby; the parents drove 2 hours
to have the clipping done. The doc observed that both parents are
tongue-tied. The parents are planning to bring both older children (now
2 and 3) to have their frenula clipped if needed. It sure seems likely
that they will, especially the eldest. The bbay has had further CST to
help her normalize her jaw function and mom is being treated for the
recurrent thrush that she has had with all babies and with magnesium
for OAMER. Everything is working!
The mom called me on the way home from NY in the car and told me she
had never felt a baby nurse before!!! This was a whole new experience
for her. Her dad, who is a dentist is in awe, but the loveliest part is
this: her mother had always told her that the women in their family
just cannot bf (she herself had tried, as had many others) and now she
tells my client that she has saved bf'ing for all the future
generations of her family....
