I learnt at school at 8 years old that the alimentary canal is rather more
complicated than just putting something into the mouth and it instantly
turns into part of your body.
The only way to tell how much formula a baby is 'getting' is to weigh all of
its solid excrement. This will show how much, (in fact of course, how
little) baby is actually getting. This is because it simply cannot be
digested by the baby. The cow's milk element requires four stomachs which
the baby will never have and the other food elements require a mature
digestive system which they don't have yet. The non food elements such as
chalk (one formula I read the ingredients of recently had this as the second
largest constituent) added purely to help the digestive system tolerate the
formula and not throw it all up again, or as a laxative etc will never be
digested ie 'got' by a human or any other animal. Add to this the nutrients
like iron which can't be absorbed well as they leach through sores (probably
need correction for technical term for this) in the gut and you have a baby
getting not so much.
So breastfed babies get all the milk that goes into them. It's not just a
small proportion off it with the rest clogging up their intestines with
constipation straining their hearts(no medical evidence for this just
watching them is painful enough though as thy strain and strain) and
leaching through little holes in their insides.
Sorry if this isn't quite constructive enough but best I can do
