I have noticed a disturbing trend in my area and wanted to reach out to the
wider Lactnet community to see if the trend is also happening elsewhere. In
my area, I have had several mother seek my guidance after being seen by
other lactation specialists (in an out-patient hospital setting) and when we
reviewed what feeding tools these mothers were using they showed me the
Haberman feeders they had been instructed to use. When I asked why the
previous provider had selected this tool for this dyad I was told by the
moms that, "the other LC told me it was a special bottle that would not
cause nipple confusion". None of these particular babies had any need for a
Haberman feeder, all had the ability to form suction and transfer milk
effectively with suction. All the dyads I am thinking of had issues
COMPRESSING the nipple and had posterior tongue ties that had been missed.
Of course the Habermans were just worsening the compression issue and we
restructured their care plan completely. However, what totally blew me away
is that the Haberman was totally misrepresented. Perhaps now that it is
called a Special Feeder some providers assume it is different or for a
different purpose? Not sure, but it was being represented and used in a
totally incorrect manner. Because this issue has cropped up with a few
different dyads I thought I'd explore where this misuse/mistundertsanding of
the Haberman is coming from. Are other LCs encountering this misinformation
in their area?
