Hi everyone,
Got a message from the doctor this evening thanking me for my
concern and taking the time to fax him about this baby.
MD reports baby had gained 7 ounces from Tuesday to Friday of last
week on a regimen of EBM and ABM. (Mom had told me she wasn't giving formula
and quote "doesn't even know how to mix it" -- a case of telling someone
what you think they want to hear...??). MD also states this baby is not (he
emphasized NOT) clinically dehydrated and that Mom was somewhat "frustrated
by what she viewed as the over zealous concern of the contacts from La Leche
League" -- (implying that I was somehow off the mark in my concern????)
MD stated he instructed Mom to get hospital grade electric pump and
pump both breasts to stimulate supply and to nurse prior to pumping to
stimulate the breasts and to encourage continued breastfeeding (these were
my suggestions to him in my fax, 'though he didn't acknowlege this in his
message).
He stated Mom and Dad were comfortable with this regimen and that
the baby would be followed once or twice a week as needed. He also stated he
felt mom was initially overwhelmed by her other kids and a baby with nursing
difficulties.

So, I'm glad the baby is okay... I still have my doubts about the
veracity of the Mother's reports either to myself or to the physician and
plan a follow -up letter to him about why I was "over zealous" --

So Pediatricians out there -- what is *the* definition of clinically
dehydrated??? How about a reference for the "brick dust" pinkish crystals
in the urine being a warning sign?

Any suggestions for follow up with this case? with MD? with Mom? My first
inclination is to defend myself with a fully referenced letter on why I felt
this baby was in imminent danger and explaining LLLI does NOT generally get
this involved in a case... yada yada yada -- but on second thought baby is
fine. Period. End of case?

Imput??

TIA
