Wonderful mouthcare! As we know, most microbes gain entry via the mucus
membranes - and all those wonderful protective properties of colostrum and
milk can make a significant difference in protecting the baby. One tertiary
hospital here harvests a few drops of colostrum from all new prem mothers -
it goes directly into the baby's mouth before anything else. Their
infection rate in the NICU has dropped dramatically since introducing this
and other "breastfeeding" protocols. (They have a KMC policy and even HIV
pos mothers hand express and Pretoria pasteurise their own milk for their
tiny babies.)
