I was recently at our local Children's Museum "Healthworld"- devoted to
teaching children about their bodies & healthy behaviors. In the babycare
section I was appalled to see an 8 foot bottle (It was serving as a display
case for a video show on infant development.) I talked, wrote & sent
information to the department in charge of displays. I was told that the
bottle was deemed acceptable by the Children's Museum board since some of
the boardmembers expressed breastmilk for their children and didn't feel it
necessarily implied a promotion of formula.
I think the main issue was one of $$.
The museum employee told me that if I felt strongly about the issue, and
could come up with $10,000 to change the bottle display case then she would
be happy to discuss it with me further.
Do any of you have any ideas for breastfeeding promotion in a children's
museum? Do any of you have any examples from museums near you that I could
reference? I figure that for the effort of raising $10,000 I would need to
look at grant writing. If I am doing that- I might as well shoot for the
moon & get something fantastic that is pro-breastfeeding (not just
anti-bottle or formula.)
If money were no object- what would you want to see in a children's museum
near you? Do you have any suggestions that would be helpful but cost less
that $10,000?
Does anyone have any helpful tips on talking to museum boards?
Thank you. You can respond off list.
