Catching up on reading this weekend while traveling, one of the articles I
read was "Breastfeeding Patterns: Comparing the Effects on Infant Behavior and
Maternal Satisfaction of Using One or Two Breasts" by Righard, Flodmark, Lothe,
Jacobsen (Birth 20:4, December 1993)
Good discussion with emphasis on tradition of two sided feeds began in
hospital (Sweden). Interesting that "mothers in both groups reported the same times
for sleep, restlessness and crying" and "the frequencies of wet diapers, loose
stools and feeds were also comparable in both groups." In essence, this small
study says that only the baby knows how much food he or she needs and
emphasizes good latch, suckling technique, and allowing the baby to finish the first
breast first.
