We have promised her that she will get excellent help - and she asked if she
should have a special plan of care. My partner in crime Aimee Creelman and I
think that the bottom line is - get a good latch, if she needs to pump use a
good pump properly. And that is the plan of care!! Same as for anyone!

Anybody else got experience with good results with ITP???

Dawn Kersula MA, RN, IBCLC in southern Vermont<>

Hi Dawn, this subject greatly interests me because I had a client who had
developed ITP at 8 yr old and had a splenectomy. I followed her through her
pregnancy and there were ridiculous things the hematologists wanted to do
that we were able to avoid due to the miracle of the internet. We got info
on her care options from nurse midwives in large centres who had more
current information than the specialists. She gave birth spontaneously, no
bleeding problems, no routine p.p. pitocin, and it never occurred to us that
anything but complete, unhindered b. feeding would follow.

Since then, I have found out that "idiopathic" is not really what this
disorder should be called. If you read the package insert in most vaccines,
they list idiopathic thrombocytopenia as a possible side effect of taking
the vaccine. In fact, the measure of whether a vax is "safe" or not is how
many cases of ITP are reported. My client was shocked to read the package
insert when she considered vaccines for her daughter and said "No one ever
told me or my parents that my disorder could have been caused by my
childhood vaccines. I won't have her vaccinated because I would never want
a daughter of mine to endure what I went through with her pregnancy."
