Baby caught West Nile from mom's milk

ATLANTA, Oct 03, 2002 (United Press International via COMTEX) -- The Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed Thursday that a Michigan newborn
whose mother contracted West Nile virus showed antibodies from the disease in
its blood.
The mother is believed to have contracted the disease from blood she received
after delivering her baby Sept. 2. The mother breastfed the infant and health
investigators found the virus in her milk. The infant did not suffer any
symptoms of the disease.

The CDC said it is continuing to investigate West Nile transmission through
blood products. Fifteen of the at least 2,530 people who have contracted the
disease this year may have gotten it from contaminated blood.

The CDC also upped its death toll for West Nile to 125. The disease has been
confirmed in 32 states.

Iowa health officials later reported that state's first West Nile death, an
80-year-old man from central Iowa.

Illinois has reported the most West Nile deaths, 35, followed by Michigan
with 24, and Louisiana and Ohio with 14 each.
