Hello,
I wish to collect some informations about the
leaves after the birth of a baby, in Germany
particularly in order to answer to a french Mom
who works there;
Is there a legal leave for breastfeeding in Germany?

Hello Françoise,
the German Maternity Protection Law says that
after birth, a woman is entitled to eight weeks of
paid maternity leave. After that time, she can
take parental leave, partialy paid. All this is
independant of breastfeeding. At work, a
breastfeeding mother has the right to have a paid
break of at least half an hour twice a day for
breastfeeding (or pumping), in addition to the
normal breaks. The position of these breaks during
the working hours is not prescribed but can be
negotiated - the mother can, for example, take it
at the beginning or the end so that the time of
separation is shorter.
Trouble is, that the break is not given
automatically, the mother has to ask for it - and
many women do not know that or do not dare to ask.
You can refer the French mom for whom you asked to
the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Freier Stillgruppen AFS
(www.afs-stillen.de) or to me for our leaflet and
for contact information.
Best wishes,
Utta Reich-Schottky, AFS
