Louise, there is absolutely no research data on this. The BF mom may be quite
successful, or not - anybody's guess. But another issue needs to be
considered - whose baby is this? (Or is this going to be?)

IMO, breastfeeding - or getting breastmilk into this baby - is not more
important than the adopting mother establishing a loving, nurturing, and
intense relationship with this baby. I am very concerned about this baby's
ability to bond with two new mothers, and the problems that this might cause,
than any milk supply problems in the BF mom who is busy enough with
employment and her own toddler.

If the adopting mom wants to induce lactation or use formula in a
supplementing device, good for her! If she were my client, I'd discourage
her from involving her friend, because the relationships could become very,
very complicated. At the very least, counsel her on all the pros and cons of
this situation, including any potential risk to her relationship with this
baby, and her friend and the friend's baby.

This is a complicated one, Louise. Please keep us posted on what happens.
