A WIC director just called me from Victoria, Texas (very rural). A WIC
client has a 3-wk old baby girl who developed mastitis and was hospitalized
for antibiotic therapy. She was released today with instructions to
supplement with ABM because *the breastmilk may contain too many hormones,
and may have given the baby mastitis.*

The mother was exclusively breastfeeding. We don't know if she stopped while
baby was hospitalized, how much supplementation may have been given, or how
long the baby was in the hospital.

The mother and baby are going to the clinic tomorrow to pick up some
supplemental ABM. I've already discussed the improbability of hormones
causing an infection. It is highly unlikely that returning to exclusive
breastfeeding would cause a rebound mastitis or infection.

Has anyone worked with a baby who had newborn swollen breasts and milk
leakage (as this baby had) that was so severe, an infection developed? Do
you have any suggestions for pain management? Did the condition recur?

Thanks for your help. (I don't need any helpful hints on what to call the
doctor :\)
