Kris,
        In the mom I saw with axillary breasts, the engorgement and swelling
resolved in about a week using ice packs.  This mom elected not to try
cabbage, and went on to bf happily for a few months.  You are correct that
they should involute naturally, the difficulty often lies in helping the mom
be patient.  Too bad her physician is so ignorant...
