Yikes.  That sounds like an *awful* lot of blood.  Intraductal papilloma
would give blood -- but a full ounce?  It does sound like the bleeding is
associated with the pump use BUT I would ask that friendly breast surgeon to
please have me come IN so that other more icky diagnoses can be ruled out.
Meanwhile, I would advise mom to:
(1) Stop pumping on the affected side, and move to hand-expression if she
needs to collect milk.  All that pump suction may be traumatic to the breast
tissue and fragile healing-then-breaking blood vessels inside; getly pressue
and squeezing may be easier on the breast.
(2) Use the baby to keep moving milk through the breast, if he is willing to
BF, and stop the pumping altogether on the affected side.  For a nice LONG
time.
(3) Have the pump itself checked, and have someone watch an *entire* pumping
session, to see what happens.  There are a whole bunch of moms out there who
don't realize they are using inferior or broken pumps ... and blame
themselves.
(4) Stop thinking of that other side as a "dud."  No doubt it is is lower
producer -- but produce it does, right?
(5) Be grateful that at 10 months of age, she has a range of options open to
her to continue to care for her breastfeeding baby, who has now moved into
complementary foods.
