Katie,
When I went in for my "annual", my OB wanted me to have a routine
mammogram. She scheduled it for me at the hospital where she delivers
and practices. When I arrived and filled out the paperwork, they
refused to do the mammogram because I was "still" nursing my twins.
They actually have a policy against it.

My doctor was not happy with them, and promptly sent them a prescription
for me to have my mammogram done and practically dared them not to.

Well, I got my mammogram, it turned out to be easily read, despite the
large volume of milk nursing twins produces, and I believe they all
learned something from the whole experience. Somebody somewhere passed
around the "you can't read a mammogram done on lactating breasts" rumor,
likely without any documentation proving that "fact", and it has become
accepted as truth rather than opinion. Reminds me of the old "if you
nurse for more than 5 minutes on each side the first day you'll get sore
nipples" hogwash that was believed in blind faith for so long.

Is it just lactation that has so many persistent myths attached to it,
or are other aspects of the medical community riddled with such nonsense
being passed off as factual?
