It is hereditary, one gene has been isolated (I heard, but have not yet 
had time to research this). The incidence has been estimated at 2-13%, 
depending on the study and population. In my practice it's huge, perhaps 
because everyone knows I'm interested in tongue tie and other sucking 
issues.
I would tell parents about it in childbirth classes, briefly.
