Valerie McClain makes some excellent points. I'd like to add one more:
Don't mourn, Organize! It is useless to sit around wringing hands at any
sad state of affairs or sniping at one another. We might be powerless as
individuals against giant conglomerates and rampant consumerism, but we
aren't helpless -- esp. if we act together. I don't want to hear another
word about the evils of formula from people who aren't willing to get out
into their communities and found milk banks. If we can do it in Austin, it
can be done anywhere. Part of our milk bank's general committment and
mission statement is to help (in terms of logistical support) any group
considering such a project. We've been very successful in our strategizing,
and we'll gladly share our tricks. People think they can't change
everything, so they don't bother trying to change one thing.

Same thing with calling for research. If you have an idea, go for it.
Grants are available to fund small projects, and many of us just absorb the
costs ourselves. It is so important to get observations into the
literature, even if just in the form of case reports, and that takes only
time, not money.
