Good Morning!

I work as a Lactation Consultant at a local community hospital. We are
trying to establish a system to better ensure that mother's milk is given to
the correct infant.

Presently, we are labeling the stored milk with a sticker that includes the
mother's and baby's name, time and date it was pumped and any medications
mother is taking.

To prevent errors, we are exploring the idea of using the system we are
currently using to administer medications--a barcoding system that
identifyies the correct medication with the correct patient when the nurse
scans the medication and then the patient's wristband.

I am wondering if anyone has had experience with this or any other improved
way of ensuring that our mother's milk is given to the right baby.

Have you tried any systems that didn''t work out? What problems did you
encounter? Has anyone written a policy for this sort of system?

I really appreciate any help.
Thanks, Elayne Clubb RN BSN IBCLC
