Dear Lactnet Friends;

When mothers are given a product at hospital discharge, they miss the
important concept that it is comfortable attachment that keeps nipples
happy. They think the product is the answer, and will keep buying it,
instead of getting help to resolve the pain. So much so that a letter was
published in JHL about 10 years ago, where a clinician suggests that if a
mother has to use a nipple cream after every feed, that that is a sign she
needs professional help.

Mother Love nipple cream has zero evidence behind it, and there are
ingredients in it (marshmallow root, calendula) that I wouldn't put on my
toast. The toast test is a useful analogy for teaching, because whatever is
in it has to be edible to be safe for a baby.

Marsha Walker has a lovely article summarizing the evidence for a variety
of things to put on sore nipples, including peppermint water. Here is the
link.
