Hi Marie--

As to the test weight figure I quoted, in Riordan & Auerbach (1993)
Breastfeeding and Human Lactation, on page 266, an article by Woolridge
(1985) is referenced, using the calculation 1gram = 1ml of intake. I believe
that it is not exact, b/c of insensible water loss with respirations, etc,
but that it was determined to be a close enough estimate to be used for
premies.

The Woolridge reference is:

Woolridge, MW (1985), et al. methods for the measurement of milk volume
intake of the breast-fed infant. In Jensen & Neville, (Eds), Human Lactation:
Milk components and methodologies. New York: Plenum Press, pp. 5-20.

I have not heard that this has changed in more recent times. If it has, I am
sure that someone will inform us.
