If indeed this has been going on from day one, then I would look for an
injury. I had one case where the baby just cried way too much in hospital,
and everyone figured it was just normal. Well, I found a broken clavicle on
that baby. Sometimes it is a hernia, or intestinal blockage, a nerve injury,
or something.
Overactive letdown and oversupply would not be seen as early as day one.
Have the baby thoroughly examined, head to toe, by the midwife, a neonatal
nurse, practitioner, or doctor. If the baby can't eat, this is an emergency.
If she can get him settled and fed, then have her think and record any
pertinent events or positions which might bother the baby, also when does he
cry/ cry the most? Does the mother smoke or use excessive caffeine or other
meds or drugs?
Please let us know how this poor family resolves this. Do encourage the mom
to have someone stay with her until this is resolved. You said the grandma
was coming. Good.
