Regarding the Gastric ByPass issue
I have inquired about this before....having cared for about 5 of these
patients including one who went "public" in a national magazine several years ago, I
will say that these babies grow well and don't seem to have
difficulties...the only thing I have seen is that all these women had cesarean
deliveries....some where elective and some had trial of labor with failure to progress. Some
are attempting to breastfeed and I have resourced them to outside LC's after
discharge. One was a dietary person in a health care facility and knew to eat
frequently, increase her proteins and supplements....the lady from the
magazine chose not to breastfeed based on the recommendation of her surgeon who told
her that HER health was more important and she couldn't maintain a
breastfeeding child and herself...she verbalized her needs and felt that her child would
be well nourished by formula....despite all information. This once again
illustrates its doctors who influence their patients and the need to inform them.
I am considering approaching all the surgeons in our area who are promoting
GB and asking their feelings and try to get a pulse on the issue and see how
evidence based their info is....It is distressing to see young women who are
having these surgeries along with implants and reductions prior to childbearing
and no one counsels them as to how things are affected by the childbearing
event....I have seen women cry because they can't support a baby breastfeeding.."I
didn't consider it at the time" or " No one told me I might have problems"
Once in awhile I will find someone who has had a doc counsel them and they know
they may have some challenges but they then are patient with the baby and them
and know they need to seek follow up...In our area its just "oh, I am going
to get the surgery because its going to be easier to lose weight." No, it's
your life will change and it's not just a quick fix....and for women of
childbearing age they must consider if they become pregnant and how they will adapt to
the needs for two...Will let you know what I discover in this adventure. I
ask anyone else who inquires and finds info to keep me posted. So far the lady
a few postings back who felt these women need the team approach of a LC/RD is
in the know....
