I would suggest first looking at your state requirements. In our state,
bottles must be prepared and ready to give so a care giver cannot cup feed
unless it is in a sippy cup with a lid. I have given a presentation on this
for several years. Some of the topics I discuss are:
Why Breastfeed?
Who's breastfeeding?
Storage, transport and safe handling of breastmilk.
How to feed a baby.
Supporting the family ( smart business sense).
Community resources.
Under supporting the family I encourage centers to have rocking chairs
available and encourage moms to breastfeed in the morning before leaving and
in the afternoon when picking up. Having juice and crackers or fruit cups for
mom in the afternoon while she nurses helps her to make the transition home.
This idea was one I used while working in a day care in the 1980's. The
mothers loved being able to nurse immediately in the afternoons, having a
snack and recharging themselves. Plus visiting with each other helped
encouragement among themselves. Some of the moms who did not breastfeed ended
up staying for the "mothers' group" and learning about breastfeeding. I also
encouraged the moms to bring the babies in their sleepers in the morning,
nurse there and go on to work and we would dress the babies. That saved some
time for the moms.
Other support ideas are newsletters with bfing tips. recipes etc. Also awards
for World Breastfeeding Week for the bfing moms.
Many day cares have interns and they are great for creating the newsletters.
