Didn't know I'd open up a hornets nest with this one.  We don't give
"500 calories" as a rule, but as a general guideline.  (I don't have
a copy at home, but will check at work tomorrow for the exact
wording.)  I think moms are more likely to hear larger numbers and
be scared off.  I frequently use the "peanut butter and a banana
added to a mom's regular diet" quote that I believe came from Dr.
Jelliffe a number of years ago.  When I did our recent staff
evaluation, you'd be surprised how many answered 2100 or 1800 as the
added calories a nursing mom needs!  We'd be sending the moms from
La Leche League to Weight Watchers!
