I've only seen one mother using one that she brought in herself, and heard a
couple others on lactnet speak of them. The reasons I think it might be
better than a hand pump for inverted or flat nipples is that 1. it is small
and handy to throw in your purse or bedside drawer, 2. it applies some
concentrated suction (I assume) and can hold it a few seconds, and most
importantly, 3. it is used only for the purpose of everting and the mother
does not get caught up in pumping and worrying about how much milk she has,
but rather she is focused on the act of everting her nipple and getting on
to the latch.
I know that hand expression works too but consider this. I am in physical
therapy for a "frozen shoulder." When the PT stretches my joint, it hurts,
and I have trouble pushing myself to that limit. Perhaps the everting of the
nipple is a little uncomfortable, and moms have a hard time doing that to
themselves, but feel ok about holding suction on the everter????
