Most of the materials, handouts, and books, etc. out there to help
breastfeeding mothers are pitched at a rather advanced literacy/education
level. This can be a disincentive for women who have only elementary school
education or women with cognitive impairment as they try to grasp unfamiliar
information. The truth is, even women who don't normally face these
challenges will have some temporary cognitive impairment just by virtue of
being post-partum. I think our community needs to explore and utilize some
of the principles of adult education and to also pitch our printed materials
to a lower literacy level.
