FDA WILL REVIEW NUTRIENT REQUIREMENTS IN INFANT FORMULA

OPEN MEETING SET FOR MAY 31, 1996

Deadline for written requests to make oral presentations May 10, 1996

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is requesting a review of data on then
nutritional needs of infants to make recommendations on appropriate
concentrations of nutrients in formula for term infants. The Infant Formula Act
of 1980 directed the FDA to ensure the safety and nutritional quality of infant
formulas. The regulations were revised most recently in 1985.

The FDA has requested the Life Sciences Research Office (LSRO) of the Federation
of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) to provide the FDA with
an up-to-date review of the nutritional needs of infants and of how those needs
should be reflected in the levels of nutrients in formulas for term infants. To
assist in making its scientific report to the FDA, LARO/FASEB will hold a
one-day public meeting on this topic on May 31, 1996, beginning at 9 am, at the
Food and Drug Administration.

LSRO/FASEB is inviting the submission of scientific data and information, as
well as providing an opportunity for oral presentations at the May 31 meeting.
Requests to make oral presentations should be submitted in writing and received
by May 10, 1996. Written presentations of scientific data, information, and
views should be submitted on or before May 31, 1996.
