I just wanted to give this group an update on the Mom I saw last week with
the horrible nipples and the OB who was not happy that I was suggesting APNO.
The doctor went with an antibiotic and hydrogel. A week later the nipples
and areola are no longer red but the cracks are still quite large but showing
signs of healing. I gave her the Dr. Jack Newman over the counter version
of his recipe and reassured her that the nipples are getting better.
Was the antibiotic the wrong route? No, I just think it was a step she did
not need yet and I hate seeing antibiotics given so frequently.
My boss and I are going to get on the OB's staff meeting agenda and discuss
care of damaged nipples and have a few MD's who have worked with us give
their testimonies to help us work with the rest.
Bottom line, Mom is still breastfeeding. :-)
