I believe the initials CLC have been used for years by people who have become
certified lactation consultants through another process but have NOT sat the
IBLCE exam.  I've never been thrilled with it either.  These initials are
always so similar and it leads to confusion for mothers who aren't familiar
with the various initials. Sue
